After countless times telling myself “it’s been done before,” “everyone is tired of tshirt lines” or getting discouraged seeing others start businesses since I started, I finally decided to commit. Not completely for myself but because of what could potentially be on the other end of the doubt.
I started @thesleepy_dreamer to celebrate Black ownership. I think one of the most effective means of obtaining justice and equality is through financial freedom so the least I can do is highlight all the amazing things Black people own.
The logo on the shirts includes the approximate coordinates of one of the first recorded slave ships to arrive in the U.S. on August 20, 1619.
The title: the sleepy dreamer is a nod to the fact that I’m a perpetual day dreamer but also the sleepiest person you’ll meet. Sort of a metaphor for black people… we’re tired, obviously, but there’s still so much work to be done. Black people can’t afford not to be ambitious and this is intended to celebrate everyone who saw past their doubt, the hurdles and the excuses and chose to be a #sleepydreamer
